Open Access at INRiM: The Institutional Policy and METRICA Repository
As stated in the “Institutional Policy on Open Access to Scientific Publications ”, the scientific community at INRiM is encouraged to publish its articles - also for the purposes of the Research Quality Assessment (Anvur), which INRiM adheres to (Art. 17 of the Statute) - in journals that involve a peer review process, thus implying approval by the international scientific community.
Articles must be published to achieve open access through one of the following methods:
- Gold Open Access: Publication in a fully open-access journal that, upon payment of an APC (Article Processing Charge), makes the article immediately available on its website and allows the deposition of the final published version in an Institutional Repository under open access. This category also includes hybrid journals, which are subscription-based but allow some articles to be published as open access (Hybrid OA). To cover publication costs in hybrid journals, INRiM has established Transformative Agreements with many publishers.
- Platinum o Diamond Open Access: Publication in a fully open-access journal that makes the article immediately available on its website for free and allows the deposition of the final published version in an Institutional Repository under open access.
- Green Open Access: Publication in a subscription-based journal that permits open access deposition in an Institutional Repository and disciplinary repositories (e.g., PubMed, ArXiv, etc.), using the version allowed by the publisher and respecting any embargo period. The Green option should be carefully considered if the published article is linked to a Horizon Europe project. More information is available in the section “The European Commission and Open Access.”
Once the article is published, INRiM authors are required to deposit it, in the version authorized by the publisher, in the institutional repository Metrology Institutional Catalog (METRICA - IRIS).
METRICA (IRIS)
METRICA is the institutional repository for INRiM's scientific output. Its purpose is to collect, document, preserve, and publish the Institute's scientific publications, including in open access. It is based on the IRIS platform (Institutional Research Information System), developed by Cineca.
The repository is indexed by major generalist and specialized search engines, ensuring maximum dissemination and visibility for the deposited materials. It is also interoperable with the Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) databases and the European Commission’s OpenAIRE infrastructure for open-access publication and archiving.
An institutional repository guarantees:
- the official status and credibility of the documents it contains;
- the persistence of information on the web and long-term preservation;
- control over full-text attachments for open access, carried out by members of the Open Science Group;
- increased visibility for the Institute's research;
- enhanced relevance of scientific contributions in the international context;
- improved efficiency in accessing data and documents thanks to specialized indexing;
- centralized document management in a single repository, avoiding resource dispersion across local archives;
- the ability to meet requirements for the Research Quality Assessment (VQR) and Open Access obligations for European and national projects.
How to Deposit Publications in METRICA and Upload Attachments
METRICA is a repository that allows users to deposit bibliographic data and publication attachments.
Access to personal pages is available to INRiM staff via login on the public page, using the credentials (username and password) already in use for Institute services.
The bibliographic records entered in METRICA and their attachments are validated by members of the Open Science Group, who are dedicated to the "open access" initiative.
For all Open Access attachments, a cover page is automatically generated upon viewing. This cover includes the bibliographic references of the publication and any statements required by publishers.
When filling in the attachment-related fields in METRICA, refer to the definitions and guidelines provided via the links on the side of the page.
