INRiM provides the national system metrological services, including calibrations, measurements, testing and proficiency testing (ILC). The Institute ensures traceability to the SI (International System of Units) according to the ILAC-P10 criteria "ILAC Policy on the Traceability of Measurement Results". It offers over 400 Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMC) types in mechanics, thermodynamics, time and frequency, electricity, photometry, acoustics and chemistry.

INRiM carries out various training activities collaborating with other bodies and institutions. It offers post-graduate training courses, such as a PhD in Metrology, thesis, internships, internships, courses aimed at the industry world, and school initiatives.

The Institute has a specialised scientific library with digital and paper collections access. The library offers bibliographic services available to internal and external users.
