The dissemination of the quantities of electric field and magnetic flux density at low frequency is ensured by the INRIM systems for the generation of standard electric and magnetic fields. By these systems, the laboratory calibrates low-frequency electric and magnetic field meters, which are used to estimate human exposure and measure the field levels generated by the systems for transmission, distribution and use of the electrical energy.

The dissemination of the quantities of electric field and low-frequency magnetic induction is ensured by INRIM's sample generation systems, through which the calibrations of meters used for the estimation of human exposure and for the assessment of electric and magnetic field levels generated by electric power transmission, distribution and utilisation systems are performed.

The services provided, with associated CMCs published on the KCDB site of the BIPM and validated by participation in international EURAMET comparisons, include:

  • Reference (standard) magnetic induction generation systems for calibrations from 5 Hz to 100 kHz with intensity ranging from 0.2 μT to 3 mT (25 μT at 100 kHz);
  • Reference electric field generation system for field strengths up to 40 kV/m at power frequency and up to 500 V/m in the range from 10 Hz to 2 kHz;
  • Set-up for the calibration of Helmholtz coil generation systems by comparison with reference magnetic field meters and for determining coil constants (magnetic flux density per unit current) from 5 Hz to 100 kHz.
