INRiM actively participates in Mission 4: Education and research, Component 2: From research to business, Investment 3.1, which aims to promote innovation and the diffusion of technologies, to strengthen skills and to facilitate the transition towards a circular economy, also through interventions aimed at the creation or strengthening of Research Infrastructures.

For this reason, in the framework of the NextGenerationEU (NGEU) program, the "Infrastructure for Energy Transition and Circular Economy @ EuroNanoLab" iENTRANCE @ ENL was born.

The new infrastructure will focus its research activities and services on four main topics:

  1. Nanomaterials for energy;
  2. Processes for material production and transformation to devices for green energy, green fuel production, energy storage, and energy management;
  3. Micro and nanoscale characterization systems and multiscale experimental techniques for functional and structural/mechanical properties and devices;
  4. Technologies for the realization of devices and systems.

The infrastructure, coordinated by the National Research Council (CNR), is made up of INRiMPolitecnico di Torino, Università di Bologna, Università di Roma La Sapienza, Università di Roma Tre and is structured in 6 geographic nodes recognized internationally in areas complementary research programs, coordinated with each other and accessible through a single central hub.

The Torino node

The Torino node, comprising Politecnico of Torino and INRiM, will specialize in technologies for fabrication and packaging of innovative devices for energy production, storage, use and management, and for fabrication and calibration of sensor arrays for energy management with metrological primary traceability.

A strategic initiative capable of combining Politecnico of Torino and INRiM skills in the synthesis of functional nanomaterials and in their processing for:

  • production and use of hydrogen for the capture and enhancement of carbon dioxide;
  • collection of renewable energy away from the coast (offshore);
  • electrochemical devices used in energy conversion and storage;
  • underground storage of energy carriers.

In particular, INRiM will make available the metrological skills in the study of the magnetic, electrical, optical and thermodynamic properties of matter, which are integrated for the realization of quantum standards of measurement units, as well as for innovative materials and nanostructured devices typical of technologies. emerging, such as photonics, spintronics and nanoelectronics.

The synergy between Politecnico of Torino and INRiM is expressed in the joint laboratory of micro and nano manufacturing PiQuET used in the enhancement of energy transition research.
