At the nanoscale, the laws of classical physics suddenly become inadequate to explain the behavior of matter. However, thanks to quantum theory it is not only possible to effectively describe the physical phenomena characteristic of the atomic and subatomic world, but it is also possible to manipulate matter at the nanometer scale thus allowing the development of new materials, technologies and electronic devices, such as for example the memresistors.

In this regard, in the review work "Quantum Conductance in Memristive Devices: Fundamentals, Developments, and Applications", published in the journal Advanced Materials, a group of INRiM researchers in collaboration with several international universities and research institutes, analyzed how quantum effects in nanoscale memristive devices can be used for a wide range of applications, from metrology to the development of next-generation memories and artificial intelligence.
