Metrologia per la salute

Metrology for health investigates contaminants such as microplastics, nanoplastics and additives. It develops harmonised measurement methods, in vitro, in vivo and in silico models, and biomonitoring approaches to investigate their entry into the body, passage across biological barriers, distribution, biotransformation, elimination and inflammatory responses.

It assesses dose–response relationships, chronic low-dose effects and the contribution of polymeric medical devices to exposure, to inform preventive strategies in clinical and occupational settings.

We study tissue distribution in murine models and food digestion using the INFOGEST protocol and mass spectrometry. We assess the bioaccessibility and transport of antioxidant compounds and protein components across Caco-2 cells. We identify peptides, amino acids and allergens, investigating bioactive peptides and potential new allergens. We analyse release kinetics from materials to support risk assessment and health protection.
