The activity is focused on the realization of gas and liquid flow measurement systems and the development of new standards and methodologies to support emerging applications in the field of fluids used as energy carriers (e.g., hydrogen, biofuels) and space applications.

Flow measurements play a fundamental role in many scientific and industrial applications in which the sector is active, among which we can mention:

  • Analysis of the effects of environmental conditions on the response of flow measurement instruments: e.g., EMPIR Project 21GRD06 (CO2 measurement), sensitivity study at low flow rates for ESA;
  • Development of custom methodologies for the calibration of non-standard instrumentation;
  • Development of a new primary system for measuring flow rates in the sub-milliliter range (from 0.15 mm3/s to 150 mm3/s), with the primary goal of creating a new hydrogen micro-flow standard for accurate measurement of hydrogen leaks;
  • Development of a mobile system for studying hydrogen dispenser verification methodologies.
  • Numerical calculation of the performance of spacecraft microthrusters.
  • Development of methods for generating variable reference flow profiles using an automotive injection system.
