The Sector represents Italy in European and international metrological and scientific bodies, covering the following quantities: Mass, Density, Hardness, Force, Gravity, Flow, Pressure, Vibrations, Viscosity, and Volume. 

The Sector conducts metrological research related to standards of measurement units, ensures metrological traceability in accordance with the CIPM MRA agreement and develops advanced methods and devices for characterizing the physical quantities it covers. Its primary objective is to meet the needs of science, industry, and modern technology, while promoting the advancement of measurement science.

The main activities include: 

• The constant improvement of national primary standards;
• The development of innovative methods based on fundamental constants of physics;
• The realization of metrological measurement systems for geophysics and nano-dynamic phenomena;
• The realization of flow measurement systems for emerging applications in the field of fluids used as energy carriers (e.g., hydrogen, biofuels) and for space applications.
