Length metrology at the atomic scale by means of combined optical and X-ray interferometry promotes the primary realization of the kilogram by counting silicon atoms through the determination of the volume of the unit cell. It also allows realising the meter at the atomic scale by measuring the interatomic distance of the atoms in silicon crystals.
