The Sector aims to develop measurement and microscopy techniques, experimental analysis methods, modelling and computational tools, and new technologies for applications in the biomedical and life sciences fields.

Particular attention is paid to studying multifunctional nanomaterials for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes (hyperthermia, controlled drug transport, imaging), tissue simulant materials or phantom, biomaterials for regenerative medicine, and quantification methods, sensors and devices for health and environmental applications.

In addition, measurement techniques are developed at the molecular, cellular and tissue level for detecting biomarkers of disease states.

In the various research areas, in vitro, phantom and in silico characterisation methods are implemented synergistically, aiming to arrive at experiments that simulate in vivo applications.
