The urgent need to mitigate climate change and limit greenhouse gas emissions drives the need to reduce the use of fossil fuels and increase the use of alternative energy sources such as hydrogen. However, to apply hydrogen safely, traceable measures for leak testing, material compatibility, sensors for process monitoring, and odorization are required to demonstrate compliance with legislation. Metrology for the hydrogen supply chain is designed to provide new and improved standards for safe hydrogen application, flow measurement, hydrogen quality assessment, and custody transfer.
