Metrology, the science of measurement, is fundamental for innovation and for the reliable functioning of key sectors such as advanced manufacturing, energy, health and digital technologies. EURAMET’s programmes, co-funded by the European Union and participating states, aim to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness, support the green and digital transition, and ensure the quality, reliability and safety of measurements.

According to EURAMET’s new report on economic benefits, every one million euros of EU funding has generated more than four million euros in turnover from innovative products and services enabled by metrology research. Overall, EMRP and EMPIR have produced an estimated economic impact of 1.6 billion euros, a result expected to be mirrored by the current Metrology Partnership.

Evaluations carried out by the European Commission and independent experts confirm the strategic importance of metrology for Europe’s technological sovereignty: advanced measurement capabilities are essential to support critical technologies, ensure cross-border compatibility and reduce dependencies on third countries.

INRiM actively contributes to this effort through high-level scientific research, advanced infrastructure and international collaboration, offering key expertise for innovation and national development.
