Quantum Technologies and Standardisation: European Work Stream 16 “Quantum” Report Published

The report “Quantum Technologies Standardisation: State of the Art and Recommendations” has been published as part of Work Stream 16 “Quantum” of the European Commission’s High-Level Forum on European Standardisation.

Led by Italy and coordinated by the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT), the working group brought together representatives from Member States, standardisation bodies, industry associations, European organisations and sector stakeholders to identify priorities and develop strategic recommendations for the standardisation of quantum technologies. The report acknowledges the support provided to MIMIT by CEI – Comitato Elettrotecnico ItalianoINRiM – Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca MetrologicaUNI – Ente Italiano di Normazione.

The report provides an overview of the current state of quantum technologies in Europe and examines the main challenges and opportunities related to standardisation in areas including quantum computing and simulation, quantum communication and networking, quantum metrology, sensing and enhanced imaging, and enabling technologies.

INRiM contributed to the initiative by providing its scientific and professional expertise in quantum metrologymetrology for quantum technologies, and quantum technology standardisation. In particular, the Institute supported the definition of shared references and approaches aimed at the future validation and certification of quantum technologies.

Among the report’s key recommendations is the need to strengthen coordination among research organisations, industry, standardisation bodies and public institutions, fostering the development of standards that enhance interoperability, reliability and competitiveness across the European quantum ecosystem.

INRiM’s contribution forms part of the Institute’s broader commitment to supporting the development of quantum technologies and the measurement infrastructures required for their future industrial deployment.
