Laboratorio campi magnetici di gradiente pulsati

The laboratory is dedicated to the generation and measurement of pulsed gradient magnetic fields. The facilities are used to perform heating tests on metallic implants in the context of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to characterize hardware dedicated to such field measurements.

The laboratory is equipped with:

  • A tri-axial automatic positioning system for electric and magnetic field probes
  • An NI PXIe system with signal generation and acquisition cards
  • A software infrastructure for automatic control of the experimental activities
  • Tissue simulators (phantoms) to reproduce the electrical properties of human tissues
  • An active-shielded, three-channel gradient coil, similar to those used in MRI scanners. The coil has an inner diameter of 470 mm and a length of 1500 mm, and it can be powered with a peak current of 600 A and a maximum voltage of 800 V
  • A three-channel transconductance amplifier capable of generating maximum currents of 1000 A with maximum voltages of 1035 V
  • An 8-channel fiber-optic temperature measurement system
