On November 18, 2025, at 2:30 p.m., in the Aula Magna of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Florence (Via Sansone 1, Sesto Fiorentino), the seminar “Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in Science” will be held by Dr. Gwen Grinyer (Department of Physics, University of Regina, Canada).
In celebration of the International Day of LGBTQIA+ People in STEM, Dr. Grinyer will share her personal and professional experiences in the field of nuclear physics, addressing the themes of equity, diversity, and inclusion in science. The seminar will offer a reflection on the importance of visibility and mutual support in creating more welcoming and inclusive research environments that recognize diversity as a valuable resource for scientific innovation.
The event is jointly organized by the University of Florence, LENS, the National Research Council (CNR), INRiM, and INFN.
Dr. Gwen Grinyer is a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Regina (Canada), where she conducts research on various topics in experimental nuclear physics, including the structure of short-lived radioactive nuclei, rare modes of radioactivity, and nuclear astrophysics.
She is the President of the Canadian Institute of Nuclear Physics (CINP) and currently the only international member appointed to the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) in the United States.
In addition to her research activities, Dr. Grinyer is a prominent advocate for women and LGBTQ+ people in STEM, engaged in numerous outreach initiatives across Canada to enhance visibility and inclusion of underrepresented identities in physics.
She has received several awards for her work, including a Lifetime Fellowship from the Canadian Association of Physicists (2024), the President’s Award for Service Excellence for advancing EDI at the University of Regina (2024), and the “Women Breaking Barriers” award at the YWCA Regina Women of Distinction Awards (2025).
