Magnetocaloric materials for magnetic refrigeration

Materiali magnetocalorici

Magnetic refrigeration technology at room temperature is based on the magnetocaloric effect around the first-order magnetic transition of compounds such as La(Fe,Si)13 and MnFe(P,Si).

INRIM conducts experimental and theoretical research on the characterisation of the magnetocaloric effect and the relationship between material microstructure and magnetocaloric properties. In particular, hysteresis in temperature and magnetic field, avalanche dynamics in first-order phase transformation and relaxation effects are studied.

The laboratory is equipped with Peltier cell-based calorimeters operating in a magnetic field, heat flow compensation calorimeters and magnetometers.
