The laboratory realize and disseminate the unit of length as prescribed by the Italian Law 273/1991, ensuring the traceability to the unit in Italy. The international equivalence of the standard and calibration certificates is assured by the participation to the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement.
The laboratory calibrate the vacuum wavelength λ₀ of lasers used in interferometric applications by measuring theri frequency f and using the relation λ₀ = c / f , where c  is the vacuum speed of light and f  is the measured frequency.
