The sector realizes SI electrical units and maintains national standards for current, voltage, power, energy, and impedance. It represents Italy in metrology bodies, supports standards and regulation, provides calibration services, and participates in international comparisons.

The sector is responsible for the practical realization of the SI electrical units ampere, volt, ohm, siemens, coulomb, farad, henry, watt, and joule. It maintains the corresponding Italian national standards (DM 591/1994) for electrical current, electrical power, electrical energy, voltage under sinusoidal AC conditions, resistance under sinusoidal AC conditions, capacitance, and inductance.

The sector represents Italy and INRIM within the framework of the Metre Convention in the Consultative Committee for Electricity and Magnetism (CCEM) of the CIPM, and in the Technical Committee for Electricity and Magnetism (TC-EM) of the European Association of National Metrology Institutes (EURAMET).

The sector’s calibration and measurement capabilities are internationally declared in the BIPM Key Comparison Database and are supported under the Mutual Recognition Arrangement through participation in international measurement comparisons.

It participates in Technical Committees of standardization bodies (CEI, CENELEC, IEC) and provides technical support to regulatory activities of the Ministry for Industry and Made in Italy.

The sector provides technical certification and support for the accreditation of Calibration Laboratories (LAT) in Italy, issuing approximately 170 calibration certificates per year. It also conducts interlaboratory comparisons in impedance, electrical power and energy, and RF scattering parameters.
