Accurate and traceable temperature measurements are essential in many areas of modern life, supporting applications ranging from industrial processes to environmental monitoring. Since 2019, the kelvin, the SI (Système International) unit for temperature, has been defined in terms of the fundamental Boltzmann constant, driving the development of new approaches to realizing and disseminating thermodynamic temperature. While primary thermometry has advanced significantly in the 4 K to 300 K temperature range, directly relevant to fields including quantum technology, healthcare and energy, the traceable dissemination of the new kelvin still requires reliable secondary thermometry based on suitable transfer standards.
To address these and other emerging needs in metrology, Setup-T aims to strengthen thermometry expertise and calibration and measurement capabilities at emerging European National Metrology Institutes (NMIs), enabling them to contribute to the dissemination of thermodynamic temperature through improved secondary thermometry. The project will identify suitable capsule-type resistance thermometers and thin-film sensors as transfer standards. Time- and cost-effective calibration procedures will be developed, and the performance of the selected thermometers and calibration approaches will be evaluated through inter-laboratory comparisons. The resulting protocols and guidelines will support end-users by expanding access to accurate and traceable temperature measurements.
