The Scientific Director coordinates research work and draws up proposals for plans as well as periodic activity reports being submitted, for their respective competencies, to the President and the General Manager for approval by the Board of Directors.

He is chosen, based on public notice, from among persons of high scientific qualification and proven experience in the coordination of research activities.
 
The Scientific Director is appointed by the President. He remains in office for five years and may be reappointed once.

The current Scientific Director is Professor Pietro Asinari.
