The President, chosen by the Minister of University and Research from among highly qualified scientific personalities with many years of experience in the management of bodies, is the Institute's legal representative.

The President is responsible for institutional relations, represents the organisation in European and international metrological bodies, and supervises, oversees and controls the proper conduct of activities.

His/her powers include the preparation of the organisation's Three-Year Activity Plan and Ten-Year Strategic Vision Document.

The President remains in office for four years and may be reappointed once.

The current President of INRIM is Professor Diederik Sybolt Wiersma.
