The Piedmont Region’s Complement for Rural Development (CSR) 2023–2027 sets out the regional rural development strategy and has a total financial allocation of €756 million.
In line with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, the European Green Deal, the Farm to Fork Strategy and Italy’s National Sustainable Development Strategy, the CSR supports the competitiveness and sustainability of Piedmont’s agricultural sector through measures mainly focused on:
- climate resilience and environmental protection, including measures to address drought, protect water resources, promote renewable energy production and improve animal welfare;
- agricultural and technological innovation, by supporting organic, integrated and precision farming, research and digitalisation processes in the agricultural, forestry and agri-food sectors;
- protection and development of rural areas, by supporting young farmers and ensuring the continuity of agricultural activities in mountainous and disadvantaged areas.
Within this framework and under Call SRG01/1/2024 “Support for EIP-AGRI Operational Groups”, INRiM participates in the QUALVIN – Rapid methods for enhancing grape and wine quality in the context of climate change project – CUP J37F26000010009.

The QUALVIN project – Rapid methods for enhancing grape and wine quality in the context of climate change – aims to support the Piedmont wine sector in adapting to the effects of global warming. Rising temperatures alter grape ripening, leading to higher sugar levels, lower acidity, and reduced concentrations of anthocyanins, polyphenols and aroma precursors, with consequences for wine quality and sensory characteristics. The project will develop and validate a rapid, multiparametric, portable and non-destructive system based on Raman spectroscopy, integrated with chemometrics and artificial intelligence.
The system will enable the analysis of whole grapes, particularly Nebbiolo and Barbera varieties, at harvest or upon delivery to the winery, without sample preparation or reagents. Raman data will be correlated with conventional laboratory analyses to develop predictive models of technological, phenolic and aromatic maturity. Sampling, measurement and data storage protocols will also be established, and microvinification trials will assess the ability of grape analyses to predict wine quality.
The solution will help technicians and winemakers guide agronomic interventions and winemaking practices, establish objective criteria for the economic valorisation of grapes, and improve quality control in vineyards and wineries.
