CHAMP-ION SGA1 leverages European fabrication capabilities to strengthen EU sovereignty and leadership in ion-trap quantum technologies. The project establishes a sustainable and high-quality pilot line network across Europe to accelerate innovation in ion-trap chips (ITCs), secure the EU supply chain, support SMEs and start-ups, and define standards for industrialization and mass production.

CHAMP-ION will create Europe’s first open-access pilot production infrastructure for ITCs, enhancing the EU’s competitive advantage through reliable, high-quality industrial manufacturing. Its vision covers the full value chain, from design and microfabrication to testing, delivering scalable and mass-producible ITCs with integrated electronic and photonic structures.

The project will drive the transition of ITC technology from research to high-yield industrial production by coordinating pilot line management, developing advanced fabrication capabilities and ITC Process Design Kits (PDKs), and enabling scalable solutions for quantum technologies.

As a central hub for the EU ion-trap industry, CHAMP-ION will provide tailored, high-quality ITCs to European stakeholders, supporting a sustainable and resilient ecosystem for quantum communication, sensing, and computing while reinforcing Europe’s strategic autonomy.
