Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic imaging modality extremely widespread and effective. Its functioning is based on an advanced combination of magnetic fields. The Sector works on various technological aspects of MRI, to valorize and develop its full applicative potential.
The interests of the Sector include:
- Development of quantitative MRI techniques, with particular attention to Electric Properties Tomography (EPT), which aims at transforming each pixel of the acquired images into actual measurements, with their uncertainties, of physical parameters exploitable as biomarkers.
- Production and characterization of tissue-mimicking materials and phantoms, usable as references to test the reliability of both traditional and quantitative MRI techniques and to perform intercomparisons aimed at verifying the comparability of results obtained by different clinical centers.
- Design of portable low-field MRI scanners, with particular attention to the components generating the static and the radiofrequency magnetic fields, and check of their proper functioning.
