A partire da Lunedì 19 Settembre 2022, INRiM aprirà il “Ciclo Seminari INRiM – II Stagione”, una serie di conferenze tenute da personale INRiM e da relatori provenienti da Istituti esterni, promossa con lo scopo di favorire scambio di conoscenze, sinergie e collaborazioni di carattere scientifico.

I seminari, di cadenza bisettimanale, si terranno in modalità virtuale il Lunedì dalle 14:00 alle 15:00.

“Magnetic Techniques for Rapid Diagnostic Testing for Health Care and Environmental Monitoring”

Abstract: The current concern for health pandemics and food poisoning outbreaks demands fast bioanalytical platforms, ideally affordable, easy to use, and portable to help contain and reverse illness or prevent contaminants from entering the food chain.

Lateral flow immunoassays (LFIs) meet these requirements. They are paper-based tests, whose best-known example nowadays is the COVID19 antigen test. There are some limitations for LFIA expansion, mainly their sensitivity and detection limit, which are not sufficient for some applications. Magnetic nanoparticles and magnetic detectors can be an excellent way to overcome such constraints.

A new generation of magnetic lateral flow immunoassays is emerging as a powerful tool for diagnostics. It relies on magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) as detecting labels, replacing conventional gold or latex beads. MNPs can be sensed and quantified by magnetic sensors, allowing the development of immunochromatographic tests with a quantitative capability.

Additionally, they can be used for immunomagnetic separation, improving both selectivity and sensitivity. In this talk, the requirements of the magnetic labels and the associated sensing quantifying methods will be reviewed. Examples of their applicability and advantages in the health and food industry fields will be analyzed.
