Abstract

Compound atomic quantum systems are attracting more and more attention in recent years. Indeed, when atomic impurities are immersed in an atomic ensemble novel phenomena can be investigate such as polarons, pairing formation, quantum transport, etc. In this respect, atom-ion systems offer a unique platform, since the (ion) impurity is charged and the longer ranged atom-ion interaction provides a new energy and length scale in the many-body problem.

In this talk I shall present our recent investigations on the static and dynamical properties of an immersed static ion in a quasi-one-dimensional condensate. The analysis is carried out by means of the ab-initio multi-configurational time-dependent Hartree method for bosons, which enable us to take into account all correlations in the system. Extensions to the moving ion case will be discussed as well.
