Single photon detectors

The laboratory Innovative cryogenic detectors develops and characterizes superconducting single photon detectors, in particular Transition-Edge Sensors (TESs), in close collaboration with the ML1 sector. TESs are metal films whose steep superconducting transition is exploited to measure the energy of the absorbed single photons with an energy resolution of tens of zJ in the UV to NIR energy range. The intrinsic energy resolution, photon number resolving capability, low dark counts and high quantum efficiency make them detectors of interest for a wide range of applications like single photon metrology, dark matter search in the form of dark photons and  cosmic neutrino background search (PTOLEMY link:
