Advances in Foundations of Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Information with atoms and photons

under the "High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic"

Purpose of this workshop is to favour the exchange of ideas and discussion on last results among leading physicists working in the interconnected fields of Quantum Information and Foundations of Quantum Mechanics, in particular in the framework of quantum optics. It is organized "ad memoriam" of our colleague and friend Carlo Novero who gave birth to this research line in our Institute.

• Abstract submission
  The deadline for abstract submission for contributed talk is 10th January 2012. DEADLINE HAS PASSED
  A selected number of high quality papers related to the workshop will be published on International Journal of Quantum Information.
  The submission should be performed by using the IJQI web system, indicating as contributions to the Quantum 2012 conference; here the submission steps.
  The deadline for the papers submission is september 10, 2012.
  
  
• Conference fee
  The conference fee is 200 €; payment at the conference desk.

  Please reserve your accommodation yourself.
  
  • To stay near Workshop site, we propose Guala Residence and Hotel Cristallo , within 10 minutes walking distance from INRIM.
    
  • If you wish to stay in a hotel in downtown Torino, close to railway station Porta Nuova and close to the bus terminal for Torino and Malpensa airports, we propose
    Hotel Montevecchio , Hotel Astoria , Hotel Luxor , and Hotel Sitea .
    
  Transportation from/to INRIM will not be provided.
  
  
• Internet connections
  Hotel Montevecchio has one internet point in the entrance of the hotel and wi-fi connection in the rooms.
  Hotel Astoria has one connected PC located in the entrance of the hotel, available for the guests.
  Hotel Luxor and Guala Residence have Internet connection by cable in the rooms.
  Hotel Cristallo has wi-fi connection in the rooms.

• Notes for Speakers
  
  • The meeting rooms will have LCD projector & laser pointer.
    Computers (Windows 7) are provided; please upload & test your presentation early in the morning, before session starting, or at lunch break.
    You may use your own computer, or you may make arrangements to share with some other speaker in your session.
  • The LCD projectors that are provided have standard XGA interfaces.
    The connector is a standard VGA-style connector. If you have a Mac that needs an adapter, please do not forget to bring it.
  • If you plan to use your computer with the LCD projectors that are provided, please learn to use your computer before your talk begins.
    The sessions must proceed on time, so the time for configuring your laptop must be included in your speaking time.
    The conference organizers cannot usually know how to connect your computer for you.
  • Talk duration includes questions and laptop setup !!!

• Some information about Turin
  Turin is a relatively large European town (1 milion of inhabitants) near Alps (in 2006 winter olympics games were in Turin). The weather in May is already warm (about 25 Celsius degrees), but can be rainy.
  
  
  
  
  The history of Turin is quite long: it appeared first time in III century b.C. as allied of Rome during second Punic war (it was destroyed by Hannibal who crossed Alps in the valley in front of it).
  Then it was refounded by emperor Augusto as “Augusta Taurinorum”. At the end of empire was seat of a bishop. Then it was free city before becoming part of Savoia dukedom (vassal of Holy Roman Germanic emperor). Since XV century became the capital town of the dukedom (University was founded in 1403) and, after having sustained a long siege of French troops in 1706, with Utrecht peace (1713) capital town of Sardinia Kingdom. During the whole medieval, renaissance and baroque time it was often besieged during wars between French, Spaniards and Empire, becoming periodically under French power. It was part of French Empire of Napoleon. After restoration it became the centre of Italian Unification. The king of Turin Vittorio Emanuele II unified Italy in 1859-1861 and Turin became the first capital town of the unified kingdom. In the last century, after the transfer of the capital town to Florence (and then Rome), Turin grew as industrial town. Among famous Turin physicists of the past one can remember Lagrange and Avogadro.
  
  Many historical monuments remember its history as the royal palace, the palace of the queen (“Palazzo Madama”), the mole Antonelliana (a former synagogue, the highest building in bricks in the World), the holy shroud chapel and the renaissance cathedral, many baroque palaces. Many museums collect the collections of Savoia dukes (among them the most famous is Egyptian Museum, the second in the World after Cairo).
  
  
• How to get to Torino
  The “Città di Torino Airport”, situated in Caselle, 16 kilometres (10 miles) north from the town centre, serves Torino. For further information see the airport Web site.
  
  A continuous coach service of SADEM lines (blue buses) connects the Airport with Torino railway central station Porta Nuova. The bus leaves just in front of the arrival exits of the Airport. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office and at the automatic ticket-machine close to the exit for € 5,50, or on the bus at € 6 (2009 fares). Travel time from the Airport to the town centre is about 40 minutes. Bus timetable.
  
  As an alternative, a Taxi service is provided outside the terminal, just in front of the arrival exit. The one-way fare to go to downtown is approximately € 35 in the day and € 50 by night; from the airport to INRIM the price is about € 50 in the day and € 70 in the night. Travel time to Turin center is about 20 minutes, about 30-40 minutes during rush hours.
  
  Also car renting is possible at the Airport, with these companies: AVIS, Hertz, EuropCar, Budget/Maggiore, Sixt/Autotravel, Thrifty/Italy by Car. Car rentals companies are grouped together, immediately in front of the Domestic Arrivals, ground floor-level zero. Daily car parking is possible for free in the courtyard of INRIM.
  
  
• Buses In Torino
  Metro, buses and tramways provide public transportation in Torino. Tickets can be purchased at the news-stands and tobacconists, not on the buses. Price of one ticket is € 1.5; one ticket is valuable on the whole urban network for 90 minutes since its validation, which has to be made before the first stop by using the punching machines on board.
